Meet Reece and Lane Collins
Reece and Lane are the sweetest sisters – born in Tennessee to Jared and Karah Collins. Since day 1, they have both been a joy and a light to anyone that gets the opportunity to meet them.
After Reece (oldest sister) routinely failed hearing screenings, she was diagnosed with profound hearing loss. This led to a journey of bi-lateral cochlear implants to hopefully give her access to the world of sound. After the surgery, the process of routine mappings and adjustments were working wonders for Reece. Everything seemed to be progressing as it should.
That was, until Lane (youngest sister) was born. Lane, just like big sister Reece, also failed routine hearing screenings. Jared and Karah were familiar with this process, but after Lane was prescribed bi-lateral cochlear implants, they were encouraged to do genetic testing to see what may be the cause for both sisters having the same hearing loss.
The results of the genetic testing were life changing. It confirmed that both Reece and Lane have a very rare genetic condition (Usher Syndrome Type 1D) that affects both hearing and vision. Nobody wakes up one day and hopes that they hear the news that both of their children are going to suffer vision loss in addition to struggling with deafness, but we have such an amazing support system between our family, friends, and church family.
Without those people, it would be so difficult to keep hope. Our goal in sharing our story is to not only raise awareness of this rare genetic disease, but also to help fund research in treatments for it. As of today, there is no cure for Usher Syndrome Type 1D, but we know that we have 2 amazing girls worth fighting for.
Thank you for being a part of Reece and Lane’s story. Your support means so much to our family and many other families who are walking the same path that we are.
