Meet Griffin Currie
Griffin Currie, from Fort Worth, TX, is full of smiles and a lover of the outdoors. In his short 5 months, Griffin has shown a strength and persistence that can only be admired.
After a handful of failed hearing screenings, at 2 months old, we learned Griffin was born profoundly deaf. In an effort to find answers for his hearing loss, a genetic test was ordered. The results confirmed his hearing loss was caused by a rare genetic condition called Usher Syndrome Type 1D (USH1D).
Usher Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that causes deafness at birth and will progressively rob him of his vision throughout adolescence. There is currently no cure.
Coming from a family of cyclists and runners, we dreamt that racing, in some capacity, would play a role in Griffin’s life. We dreamt of cheering from the stands, training alongside, and celebrating the life lessons taught by accomplishing hard things. We never dreamt of this race. Griffin is now in a race against time to preserve his vision.
With that being said, we are committed to providing steadfast support in pursuit of a cure. We are entirely devoted to Griffin and our role as his biggest cheerleaders. Delivering Griffin the childhood he deserves is our highest priority. Griffin has lived a lot of life for his 5 months on this earth, but his story is only just beginning.
We are hopeful. We are thankful to live in a time when technological advancements show real promise for Griffin and others like him. Now is the time to act on that promise. We believe that alongside the Usher Syndrome Society, we can fund the research, generate the exposure, and ultimately find a cure for this devastating condition.
